2025 Western Queensland Surface Trough - recovery operation

Event summary

The Western Queensland Surface Trough and Associated Rainfall and Flooding, commencing 21 March 2025 event caused widespread rain and flooding across Western Queensland. The significance of this event is highlighted by several towns including Stonehenge, Jundah and Windorah surpassing flood heights from 1974.

Activation summary

In response to the Western Queensland Surface Trough and Associated Rainfall and Flooding, commencing 21 March 2025 event, assistance has been activated for impacted communities. The latest activation summary provides an up-to-date outline of funding available within impacted LGAs.

Jointly funded DRFA exceptional circumstances packages to support recovery from the 2025 Western Queensland Surface Trough will be considered and announced jointly by the Premier and Prime Minister in response to the weather event.

Recovery operation

The recovery operation for this event will include: 

  • preparation of a business case for extraordinary assistance under the DRFA
  • offers of support from QRA Recovery and Resilience Officers (RROs) to eligible councils to help develop event specific local recovery plans
  • QRA as lead recovery agency liaising with Functional Recovery Groups to ensure appropriate state recovery planning.

QRA is working closely with councils to offer support to develop event specific local recovery plans that will be available following endorsement by councils.
