Sporting clubs, councils to receive $42.5 million in recovery funding

Disaster impacted sport and recreation clubs and local councils in South East Queensland and western Queensland can now access $42.5 million in grants to aid recovery efforts.

Jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), the Sport and Recreation Recovery Grants will support a range of activities for sport and recreation clubs and local councils impacted by two separate disaster events this year.

Eligible not-for-profit sport and recreation clubs and local councils can apply for up to $1 million to help repair, restore, rebuild, and where possible, improve resilience of facilities damaged during the severe weather events.

A total of $27.5 million is available to clubs and councils in 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across South East Queensland that felt the fury of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in March.

A further $15 million is available to 40 western Queensland LGAs that suffered the effects of the record breaking floods between March and May.

The grants provide a welcome boost for the sport and recreation clubs which are the heart and soul of Queensland communities, often providing opportunities for locals to meet up regularly and check in with each other.

Many sporting organisations across South East and western Queensland are still dealing with the impacts of these weather events, including damage to infrastructure and equipment.

Sport and recreation activities deliver a range of benefits for all communities and this funding will provide much-needed assistance to repair facilities, restore operations, and build resilience for future disasters.

Repairing and improving the resilience of community sporting facilities will help Queensland communities come together, recover from the disasters and continue the important role of sport in everyday life.
